Everyone should have a short wave of some sort and a good portable antenna. You can get them just a little bigger than a deck of cards and USB C rechargeable. The antenna can wrap around it for the total size of a small field notebook. Mine has saved my sanity a couple of times out in Nowhere, West Texas.
Edit: AM, FM, NOAA Weather band plus Alert, Shortwave (2300 - 26100 kHz), VHF Aviation!
This is what I am talking about.
Do you mean a two-way radio, or just a receiver? Why?
How?
I’m not a radio wizard, I don’t know all the technical terms but with a cheap AM/FM Shortwave radio like a C. Crane knock-off with a wire antenna, you can pick up all sorts of shit, especially in the evenings.
As for my sanity? Well, it helps pass the time. We used to hunt on a ranch on the Devil’s River it was 40k acres. You get back there away from everything, it can get boring, lol.
I used it during Harvey as well. It has a weather band, and, I think, an emergency band. I got it on Alibaba or Wish IDR.
Are you talking about Meshtastic or HAM, or something else?
Just a little AM/FM Shortwave radio like the ones C Crane makes. You can get them off Alibaba or one of those sites for under $50. They do AM, FM, NOAA Weather band plus Alert, Shortwave (2300 - 26100 kHz), VHF Aviation.
I used mine during Harvey and I keep one in my hunting bag for listening to whatever I can find in the evenings when we aren’t hunting especially if we are in some far-flung place.
I think they mean AM/FM and probably weather alerts.
AM, FM, NOAA Weather band plus Alert, Shortwave (2300 - 26100 kHz), VHF Aviation. I will dig it out and take a picture when I get home. I don’t know shit about radios so maybe I am explaining it wrong.
